Train from South Station

This is the most convenient option for guests staying downtown. South Station is approximately a 10-minute walk from The Godfrey Hotel and offers direct rail service to Boston Stadium on match days.

Stadium Express Coach Service

Stadium Express operates dedicated motor coaches departing from multiple locations across the city, offering a flexible alternative to rail.

Upon check-in, the hotel will place a credit card authorization of $200 per stay, in addition to room rate and taxes. This is a standard practice across hotels in the United States and is held to cover any incidental charges during your stay, such as restaurant dining or minibar purchases. The authorization is released by the hotel immediately upon check-out; however, your bank or card issuer may take several business days to reflect that release. Guests using a debit card should be aware that the authorization may temporarily appear as an actual charge against their bank account balance. For this reason, we recommend using a credit card rather than a debit card when possible, and ensuring your available credit is sufficient to cover the authorization alongside your other travel expenses. International guests banking outside the United States may experience a longer processing window for the release, which is normal and dependent on your home institution's policies.

Boston is one of the most walkable cities in the United States, relatively flat, and compact enough that many of its most popular landmarks are within easy reach of one another. The Godfrey is centrally located, placing guests just minutes on foot from Boston Common, Downtown Crossing, City Hall Plaza, Chinatown, the Theater District, Beacon Hill, the Charles River Esplanade, and the historic waterfront. We strongly encourage walking whenever possible as it is often the fastest, most enjoyable, and most practical way to experience the city. For destinations further afield, such as Harvard University and Harvard Square, Boston's subway system, known locally as the T, is the recommended option. The Godfrey is steps from all four primary T lines, providing straightforward access to virtually any destination in the city. Taxis and rideshare services such as Uber are widely available, though travel by car is often slower than the T due to city traffic and is considerably more expensive. For most guests, a combination of walking and the T will cover everything Boston has to offer.

Tipping practices in the United States differ from many other countries and are worth understanding before you arrive. In restaurants, it is standard practice to leave a gratuity of 18 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill, as service staff in the United States are compensated under a wage structure that is designed with gratuities as an expected component of their income. Tipping is also common for other services including hotel housekeeping, taxi and rideshare drivers, bartenders, and hotel bellstaff, typically ranging from a few dollars to 15 to 20 percent depending on the service. It is worth noting that many point-of-sale payment terminals will prompt customers with suggested tip amounts, including in settings such as quick-service counters and retail shops where tipping is not a customary expectation. There is no obligation to tip in those circumstances. This information is provided simply so that international visitors are familiar with local customs before and during their stay.

Credit cards are accepted almost universally in Boston, and contactless payment methods such as Apple Pay are widely supported at restaurants, shops, hotels, and most other points of sale. For the majority of visitors, cash will rarely be necessary. If you do need local currency, ATMs are readily available at bank branch locations throughout the city as well as in many convenience stores and retail shops. To minimize fees, bank-operated ATMs are generally preferable to those found in retail locations, which often carry higher transaction charges. If given the option at an ATM to complete your transaction in your home currency rather than US dollars, it is typically more advantageous to select US dollars and allow your own bank to handle the conversion, as the exchange rate offered by a foreign bank or independent ATM operator is often less favorable than what your home institution will apply.
